I am also going to use the kuleshov effect and this is going to be shown when the victim see's a knife on the floor and then a dead body. The audience and the victim don't know who killed the person but they can make assumptions that the person was killed by a knife. This foreshadows the death of the victim as the audience assume that the girl is next and it also creates a sinister atmosphere as the knife is a dangerous object which also foreshadows how the victim is going to die. By using the kuleshov effect it means that the audience become more engaged as an enigma is created. The enigma makes the audience think what is going to happen next but also creates an element of suspense as the audience know that the victim is trapped which already foreshadows her death. The audience can build a relationship with the victims as they feel sympathy towards the victim because they can see she is vulnerable and an easy target for the killer. The audience also become scared for the girls life as they know that she is going to die but they don't know when and this creates suspense and leads the audience into the unknown. The audience feel threatened by both the knife and the killer because the audience know what the killer is capable of as they have already killed someone and so this also builds a relationship with the victim because they see her more innocent side and want her to escape. The kuleshov effect helps to build a relationship with the characters as the audience begin to feel the same emotions as the victim and the reactions of the victim help the audience to understand how they are feeling and creates shock and suspense for the audience. The kuleshov effect is conventional to thriller films because it creates an element of surprise for the audience as they would be shocked to see the knife and the dead body and it straight away creates a sinister atmosphere and keeps the audience on edge. The kuleshov effect is also conventional as it sets the genre of a thriller because the audience see a knife and a dead body which sets the theme of death which is used typically in all thriller films.
The next editing technique I want to use is slow editing and this is going to be used when the victim is making her way towards the curtains, where she sees a shadow, and she notices objects on the floor which link to her being kept in hostage. I would include slow editing in my sequence because slow editing is used to create suspense and tension as it makes the audience aware that there is a killer about and this makes the victim look weak and helpless because she is walking towards the victim. The slow editing is also used to portray the life of the victim and suggest that the victims life is coming to an end which engages the audience into watching the sequence as they would want to see whether the victim actually dies or not. Slow editing also makes the killer seem more threatening as it shows the victim getting closer to the killer and this makes the killer seem powerful as there is nothing the victim can do to get away from the killer and her death. A relationship is built between the killer and the audience as the killer seems overpowering and even to the audience, the killer is threatening which gets the audience more worried for the victim but also keeps the audience on edge as to whether the victim will die. The audience also are put into the shoes of the victim as suspense builds up and this creates tension for the audience. The audience are also led into the unknown as to what is going to happen next and this includes the audience into the sequence.A relationship is built by using slow editing as it creates dramatic tension and makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next. The slow editing gives a chance for the audience to see the facial expressions of the victim and the killer and this helps creates a relationship as they see the emotions and reactions that each character has which makes the sequence seem more relateable to the audience. The audience can sympathise with the victim by looking at the emotions that the victim has and understand clearly what is going to happen next. Slow editing is conventional to thriller films as it is typically used all the time to create suspense for the audience and foreshadows death for the victim. Slow editing is also used in all thriller films because it makes the audience aware that there is a killer about and that something bad is going to happen. Slow editing sets a dark atmosphere and keeps the audience on edge.

To conclude, in my sequence, I would include these editing techniques because they create the most suspense for the audience as they lead the audience into the unknown and make the audience jump when the least expected happens. Editing builds up tension for the audience as editing techniques such as slow editing and the kuleshov effect foreshadows the death of the victim and also foreshadows that something bad it going to happen. Editing techniques create a dark and sinister atmosphere and set the scene of the thriller genre straight away as they make the victim seem vulnerable and portray how weak the victim is which gives the killer more of a chance of murdering her. The killer also seems intimidating to the audience and this builds a relationship with the audience and the victim as the audience gets put into the victims shoes. Editing techniques are used to build relationships between the characters and the audience as the audience feel sympathy towards the victims. Editing also creates elements of surprise, suspense and shock for the audience and this is shown through reaction shot and linking of sections which keep the audience on edge and keep them intrigued into watching the rest of the sequence.
